Hanover Gardens Flood

Hanover Gardens is a residential retirement estate which has been part of the Bicester landscape since 1982. It houses 55 people and as the Bure burst it banks on Christmas Eve it spilled over into this building for the first time.

Bicesters emergency services were on hand and did a wonderful job of helping the residents away from the building.

Most of us have heard about the floods in the town centre but did anyone really take a minute to think about the knock on effects for the residents in the area.

Neil Harding did and started a Facebook page aimed at giving those involved in the Hanover Gardens flood a special Christmas lunch and we are proud to say at the last minute we were called upon to assist. The Littlebury Hotel provided the venue for the residents, staff and fire-fighters meal while this relentless Facebook group gathered donations of Christmas lunch from other local businesses.

The party went on at the Ex-Serviceman’s Club in the town centre into the evening and a great time was had by residents and Bicester town folk.

The Littlebury are pleased to have been gifted with some lovely messages and a letter from Mike Daniels of the Rotary Club Bicester and local company Kingswood Consultants.

Dear Michael, and staff

May I on behalf of the residents and staff of Hanover Gardens, and all the volunteers associated with the lunch thank you all for your wonderful hospitality yesterday.

The residents had a marvellous time and every single one that I spoke to could not praise you and the staff highly enough for the way you all looked after them.

As you know the lunch was arranged at very short notice following the evacuation of the residents from their homes on Christmas Eve after the devastating floods and this was the culmination of a caring community coming together to give them a Christmas lunch to celebrate. it could not have been achieved without your fabulous generosity in hosting the event FREE of charge.

Given that I only approached you very late on Thursday evening to ask if you could possibly assist the community initiative “in any way” your offer to host the lunch was completely unexpected and unprecedented.

The feedback I and others have received so far from the residents and public alike and continue to receive hour by hour has been positively glowing. The feeling of goodwill exemplified by many comments which followed the same theme -that of “belonging to a caring community” that this event has created has been wonderful and is in no small part down to the role you and the staff at the Littlebury played in making it all the success it was.

Thank you all once again, with all good wishes for a successful 2014.

Kind regards

Michael Daniels PHF
